压力控制阀按用途分为溢流阀﹑减压阀和顺序阀。 (1)溢流阀：能控制液压系统在达到调定压力时保持恆定状态。用於过载保护的溢流阀称为安全阀。当系统发生故障，压力昇高到可能造成破坏的限定值时，阀口会打开而溢流，以保证系统的安全。 (2)减压阀：能控制分支迴路得到比主迴路油压低的稳定压力。减压阀按它所控制的压力功能不同，又可分为定值减压阀(输出压力为恆定值)﹑定差减压阀(输入与输出压力差为定值)和定比减压阀(输入与输出压力间保持一定的比例)。 (3) 顺序阀：能使一个执行元件(如液压缸﹑液压马达等)动作以后，再按顺序使其他执行元件动作。油泵產生的压力先推动液压缸1运动，同时通过顺序阀的进油口作用在面积A 上，当液压缸1运动完全成后，压力昇高，作用在面积A 的向上推力大於弹簧的调定值后，阀芯上昇使进油口与出油口相通，使液压缸2运动。
